Levi Freeman1,2,3,4
Levi Freeman was born between 1810 and 1813 at South Carolina.5,2 Levi married first Amy (?) at South Carolina.1,6 Levi married second Mary Magdelene Wise, daughter of John H. Wise and Mary Leanna Williams, before 1867.7 Levi married third Hellen Elizebeth Elrod, daughter of George E. Elrod and Mary Alexander, between 1868 and 1869.2,3 Levi probably died between 1880 and 1881.8
Levi's parents are not yet known. It is possible that Isaac Freeman (on the Richland District, South Carolina census in 1810 and on the Fairfield District censuses in 1820 and 1830) or James Freeman (listed on the 1820 through 1840 Fairfield District, South Carolina censuses) is Levi’s father. Both had sons in Levi's age range on the 1820 and 1830 censuses.
The sixth United States census was taken in 1840. While it is possible that Levi was living at South Carolina, his name has not been found on the 1840 census.9
Levi returned a plat for 529 acres on Kellys Creek, waters of Spears Creek of the Wateree River adjoining Francis Rollinson, John Ross, John Sanders, Holly Goff, Dorse Wages, James Freeman and Dennis Freeman at Kershaw District, South Carolina, on 6 October 1845. The plat date was 26 March 1845.10,11
Levi received a grant of 529 acres on Kellys Creek, on the waters of Spears Creek of the Wateree River at Kershaw District, South Carolina, on 5 November 1845.12 (Click on the icon to see the image.).

Levi appeared on the tax list of 1848 at Kershaw District, South Carolina, as "Levi Freeman". His personal tax for the year was $0.32.13
Levi appeared on the tax list of 1849 at Kershaw District, South Carolina, as "Levi Freeman". His tax for the year was $0.37.14
Research by the writer seeks to identify the location of Levi Freeman's land grant. His land grant was on the Kershaw District and Richland District line. Some of the adjoinees on the survey lived in Richland at the time of the grant. Levi paid property tax on his land in Kershaw in 1848 and 1849, but was enumerated in Richland District in 1850 in an area between Lykesland and Browns Chapel. Two families living near Levi (those of David Hendricks and William Goff) were enumerated in both Richland and Kershaw districts in 1850.
Levi Freeman was enumerated on the agriculture schedule of 1850 at Richland District, South Carolina, as "Levi Freeman". He owned 30 acres of improved land and 499 acres of unimproved land, with a cash value of $530. He owned farm implements and machinery worth $30. He owned 1 horse, 2 milch (sic) cows, 5 other cattle, and 17 swine. The value of his livestock was $170. His farm contained 70 bushels of Indian corn, 40 bushels of peas and beans, 70 bushels of sweet potatoes, 50 pounds of butter and one bale of hay.15
The seventh United States census was taken in 1850. Levi was enumerated as "Levi Freeman", head of a household at Richland District, South Carolina. His given age was 37 and his given place of birth was South Carolina. He was a planter and the value of his real estate was $650. Also enumerated in his household were Amy Freeman, Martha Freeman, Wessley Freeman, Civilla Freeman, Thomas Freeman and David Freeman.1
The eighth United States census was taken in 1860. While it is possible that Levi Freeman was living at Richland District, South Carolina, he has not been found on the 1860 census. Levi Freeman and his immediate neighbors appear to have been missed by the census taker. On page 90B (printed) of the 1860 census for Richland, the household numbers jump from 108 to 119. Levi's farm and those of his neighbors may be in this missing group. There is no extant state copy of this census. There was a smallpox outbreak in Columbia in 1860 (Ederington's History of South Carolina). This may have contributed to the missing households, and possibly explain why most of Levi's children cannot be found after 1850, when they were last listed on the census.16
Levi conveyed 150 acres adjoining Howell Edmonds and William T. Roberts at Richland County, South Carolina, to Sarah A. Neeley 21 January 1867. The deed was witnessed by John D. Smith. Mary Magdelene Freeman, wife of Levi Freeman, relinquished her dower right.17 (Click on the icon to see a transcription of the deed).17
Levi moved to Hopewell District, Anderson County, South Carolina from Richland District, South Carolina between 1867 and 1870.18,17
The ninth United States census was taken in 1870. Levi was enumerated as "Levi Freeman", head of a household at Hopewell Township, Anderson County, South Carolina. His given age was 60 and his given place of birth was South Carolina. He was a farmer. The value of his real estate was $300, and the value of his personal estate was $200. Also enumerated in his household were E. C. Freeman, Silas F. Freeman and G. L. Freeman.2
Levi moved to Garvin Township in Anderson County from Hopewell Township, Anderson County, South Carolina between 1871 and 1880.2,3
The tenth United States census was taken in 1880. Levi was enumerated as "Levi Freeman", head of a household at Garvin Township, Anderson County, South Carolina. His given age was 63 and his given place of birth was South Carolina. He was a farmer. Enumerated with him was his wife, Hellen Elizebeth Freeman. Also enumerated in his household were William Joseph Freeman, Corrie Freeman, Barbara Freeman, Maryann Freeman and Nancy M. Freeman.3
