     Catherine M. Ess was born in May 1848 at Audrain County, Missouri.2,5 She was the daughter of John W. Ess and Margaret Burkey.2,3,4 Conflicting evidence places her birth in 1848 at Boone County, Missouri.2 Catherine M. married Louis Burkey, son of Peter Burkey and Mary Magdaline Sipp, on 20 November 1866 at Audrain County, Missouri, in a ceremony performed by W. F. The tenth United States census was taken in 1880. Elenora was enumerated in the household of George Adams Ess as his sister, "Ellen Hoffman", at Union Township, Monroe County, Missouri. Her given age was 38 and her given place of birth was Germany.3

The twelfth United States census was taken in 1900. Elenora was enumerated in the household of Valentine Hoffman as his wife, "Elnora Hauffman", at Saling Township, Audrain County, Missouri. Her given age was 57, and she was said to have been born in Germany in May 1842. She had been married for 41 years and was the mother of six children, one of whom was living.9

Elenora was widowed 28 June 1905 at the age of 62, when her husband Valentine Hoffman died at Missouri.5

The thirteenth United States census was taken in 1910. Elenora was enumerated in the household of William E. Hoffman as his mother, "Elenora Hofman", at Saling Township, Audrain County, Missouri. Her given age was 66 and her given place of birth was Germany. She was a widow and was the mother of six children, one of whom was living. Her occupation was recorded as "own income."10
