     Thomas Shields was born in 1799 at Kentucky.¹ He was the son of James Shields and Nancy (?).² Thomas Shields married Frances Johnson, daughter of William Johnson.¹ Thomas died on 24 July 1865 at age 66 years at Fayette, Howard County, Missouri.³ He was buried at in Fayette, Howard County, Missouri.²
     

Thomas Shields obtained a land patent for 80 acres at Howard County, Missouri, on 1 August 1825. The land was located in the east half of NW 1/4, section 15, in township 50, range 15.⁴ (Click on the icon to see the image.).

The fifth United States Census was taken in 1830. Thomas was enumerated as "Thomas Shields", head of a household at Howard County, Missouri. His household consisted of two males under 5 years of age, one male of 20 and under 30, one female under 5, and one female of 20 and under 30.⁵

Thomas appeared on the tax list of 31 January 1831 at Howard County, Missouri, as "Thomas Shields".⁶

The seventh United States census was taken in 1850. Thomas was enumerated as "Thomas Shields", head of a household at Howard County, Missouri. His given age was 57 and his given place of birth was Kentucky. He was a farmer and the value of his real estate was $4,000. He was not able to read or write. Also enumerated in his household were Frances Shields, James Shields, N. C. Shields, Thomas Shields, George W. Shields, Lucretia Shields, Lafayette Shields, Frances Shields, Elizabeth Shields and Parlee Shields.¹

The eighth United States census was taken in 1860. Thomas was enumerated as "Thomas Shields", head of a household at Howard County, Missouri. His given age was 60 and his given place of birth was Kentucky. He was a farmer. The value of his real estate was $6,000 and the value of his personal property was $6,195. Also enumerated in his household were Frances Shields, George W. Shields and Lafayette Shields.⁷
