     John Thomas Vaughn was born circa 1844 at Greenville District, South Carolina.1,2 He was the son of Archibald Vaughn and Elizabeth (?).4,5,2 Thomas married Jane Elizabeth Simmons, daughter of Martin Luther Simmons and Amanda Parthenia (?), circa 1864 at South Carolina.6,7 Thomas died on 18 December 1909 at South Carolina.8,2 He was buried at Clear Spring Baptist Church Cemetery in Simpsonville, Greenville County, South Carolina.2

The eighth United States census was taken in 1860. Thomas was enumerated as "Thomas Vaughn", in the household of Archibald Vaughn at Rocky Creek Division, Greenville District, South Carolina. His given age was 16 and his given place of birth was South Carolina. He was a farmer.5

Thomas began military service He joined the Confederate Army as a private, assigned to Hampton Legion, Company F, Second Regiment on 12 June 1861 at Columbia, Richland District, South Carolina.2 Thomas ended military service in February 1862. He was discharged because he was too young.2

The ninth United States census was taken in 1870. John was enumerated as "Thomas Vaughn", head of a household at Austin Township, Greenville County, South Carolina. His given age was 35 and his given place of birth was South Carolina. He was a farmer. Enumerated with him was his wife, Jane Elizabeth Vaughn. Also enumerated in his household were Thomas Martin Vaughn, Jeannettia Vaughn, William Riley Vaughn, Harold Columbus Vaughn, James Richard Vaughn, Martha Elizabeth Vaughn and T. J. Mahaffie.9

The twelfth United States census was taken in 1900. Thomas was enumerated as "Thomas Vaughn", head of a household at Austin Township, Greenville County, South Carolina. His given age was 55, and he was said to have been born in South Carolina in 1845. He had been married for 36 years, and was a farmer on a rented farm. Enumerated with him was his wife, Jane Elizabeth Vaughn. Also enumerated in his household were Samuel Marshall Vaughn and John Findley Vaughn.7

Thomas was widowed on 19 November 1906 when his wife Jane died at South Carolina.8,2
