Thomas began military service He joined the Confederate Army as a private, assigned to Hampton Legion, Company F, Second Regiment on 12 June 1861 at Columbia, Richland District, South Carolina.2 Thomas ended military service in February 1862. He was discharged because he was too young.2

Enumerated with him was his wife, Jane Elizabeth Vaughn. Also enumerated in his household were Samuel Marshall Vaughn and John Findley Vaughn.6

Thomas was widowed on 19 November 1906 when his wife Jane died at South Carolina.7,2
