Archibald began military service with the Hampton Legion of the Confederate Army in June 1861 at Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina. He was 56 years of age when he enlisted. He was assigned to Company F and stationed at Camp Cannon. He also served in Captain James S. Austin's Company D.¹ Archibald ended military service on 7 September 1861. He was discharged because of age and paid $52.16 when discharged.¹
